Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been left out of the Uganda Cranes team that will face Kenya in an international friendly on March 23 at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
Onyango, who missed the two games for Sundowns against Uganda’s KCCA FC in the CAF Champions League, is in Uganda till Wednesday.
“We could not include him because he is still recovering from injury and decided to give chance to the local based goalkeepers,” said head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.
Skipper Geoffrey Massa, who is yet to find a team after South Africa’s Baroka FC released him, and midfielder Tony Mawejje are also not included on the squad.
The coach explained that he has invited majority of local based players and a few professional playing in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Lebanon.
“This is a good game to test our squad as we also prepare for many games this season that includes the 2018 Africa Nations Championship qualifier and the 2018 World Cup qualifier matches,” added Sredojevic.
Late last year the Cranes settled for a 0-0 draw when they hosted Kenyan in an international friendly at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The Cranes used the game as they prepared for the 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Striker Emmanuel Okwi, who returned from Denmark last month and has already scored seven goals for SC Villa in the local league, has been recalled after several months out of the national team.
