Baxter: I didn't expect the poor quality

SuperSport United mentor Stuart Baxter was left disappointed with his men after their poor display against Free State Stars in the South African Absa Premiership on Wednesday night.

Amatsantsantsa A Pitori were saved by goalkeeper Riyaad Pieterse and the cross bar also ensured they bag a point at the James Motlatsi Stadium.

However, the coach said he didn't expect the poor performance from the Tshwane side, saying they were inept in the opening half.

“I didn’t expect the poor quality that we dished up tonight,” he said after the match.

Johnson: We must remain grounded

“I think sometimes we come and do these interviews, us coaches, and we spin it because we’re scared of our jobs. We want to be kind to the players, but sometimes you’ve just got to say it.

“The first half we were totally inept tactically and in the second half we were totally inept technically. I just think that was a very, very poor game from our side.

“The half-time team talk was a polite one and tactically we got the game back by changing the shape, but technically within that shape we just kept giving the ball back and we didn’t really trouble their goalkeeper.

“So we were reliant on people hitting the ball long and looking for touches and that’s not the way we play and we don’t want to play that way.

“But when you’re playing as poorly as we were I think everyone was grasping at straws and I don’t have an explanation just now, but we better make sure that we find a solution to it.

“You take a point when you’re not playing very well and you certainly take point when you could have been 4-0 down at half-time.”
