Gavin Hunt: Struggling Orlando Pirates gave a good fight

Bidvest Wits head coach Gavin Hunt felt that Orlando Pirates gave a good fight during their Absa Premiership clash at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

The Clever Boys beat struggling Bucs 2-1 to move to the top of the league standings thanks to two first-half goals from Malawi international Gabadinho Mhango.

Pirates, who are now winless in their last seven league matches, went into the game having suffered an embarrassing 6-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria over the weekend.

"We knew we were going to get a response out of them [after the loss to Sundowns]," Hunt told SuperSport.

"A great club like Orlando Pirates doesn't get beat like that last week and come back and not give a fight," he added.

"They gave a good fight in the first-half. In the second-half they come on a bit more which was expected and we were poor in the second-half but what do you expect us to do?

"We went a little further back and that wasn't the plan. We just didn't seem to have the legs to get out."

Before facing Pirates, the Clever Boys had suffered a narrow 2-1 away defeat to Reunion club Saint-Louisienne in the CAF Champions League game over the weekend.

"The weekend [CAF Champions League game against Saint-Louisienne] took a lot out of us with the heat and traveling," he added.

"But anyway it's part of the game and we'll regroup and start again for Saturday's game."

Wits will host Saint-Louisienne in the second-leg encounter on Saturday as they look to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first-leg clash.
