TikiTaka announces 2017 Gothia Cup screening in Nigeria
Ahead of the 2017 Gothia Cup in Sweden, screening dates have been announced for players in Nigeria who wish to participate, TikiTaka Group, the body responsible for presenting Nigeria has announced.
Gothia Cup is a youth competition which holds annually in Sweden, and sees youth teams from around the world participate.
Last year, the Nigerian team crashed out at the quarterfinal stage, losing 4-3 on penalties to Slovenian side NK KRSKO.
TikiTaka have also announced that only players born in 1999 or later will be eligible to register for the screening exercises, which begins across the country from next month.
Edo, Kwara, Imo, Anambra, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Plateau, Kano and Akwa Ibom States have been chosen as venues where preliminary screenings will hold, according to a statement on their Facebook page.
Borje Gustavsson is the director of TikiTaka Nigeria and he has explained why they chose to pick players from Nigeria for the youth tournament.
“Our intention is to see these young players become professionals in the long run because there are a lot of young talents in Nigeria,” said Gustavsson.
“But as you know, the most of them are too young to sign when they get to Europe, so we have to wait until they're 18. But there are always clubs interested in them and from last year’s squad, already two have been to a top club like IFK Norrköping for trial. More will come this winter.”
