Ghana drop Waris, Dwamena and Larweh from final AFCON squad
Ghana have dropped Majeed Waris, Raphael Dwamena and Attamah Larweh in naming their final 23-man squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The trio were part of the Black Stars’ 26-man preliminary list which was named on Monday. There is also a change in the goalkeeping department, where the injured Adam Kwarasey is replaced by Fatau Dauda.
The release of Waris and Dwamena comes as a surprise, with the pair having enjoyed great goal-scoring form of late in France’s Ligue 1 and the Austrian second-tier respectively.
The squad is dominated by players who represented Ghana at the last AFCON (where the Black Stars finished as runners-up), though there are a few new faces. These include Swedish-based Ebenezer Ofori and Schalke’s Bernard Tekpetey.
Ghana will continue to train for the tournament at their camp in the UAE, with their first AFCON Group D match against Uganda set for January 17 in Port-Gentil.
