Heartland, Abia Warriors boost survival hopes, more clubs in relegation dog fight

Heartland and Abia Warriors have boosted their hopes of staying up in the Nigeria league top flight after crucial homes wins with several other clubs sucked into the relegation dog fight.

Mathematically, El Kanemi Warriors, Plateau United, Akwa United, Niger Tornadoes, Shooting Stars, MFM and Warri Wolves still not safe from the drop.

On Wednesday, Heartland saw off Niger Tornadoes 2-0 in Owerri, while Abia Warriors won the local derby against Enyimba 3-1.

Abia Warriors are out of the relegation pack, which already has taken down expelled Giwa FC and Ikorodu United with two rounds of matches to the end of the season.

They are now 14th on the table with 44 points from 34 matches.

On Sunday, they will be at title-chasing Rivers United, before they end their campaign at home against troubled Shooting Stars.

Heartland, on the other hand, are fighting to avoid relegation for the first time in their history.

Despite Wednesday win over Tornadoes, they are still stuck in 18th position on 40 points.

They host Kano Pillars on Sunday, before they play away at Plateau United on the final day of action.

Like their title chase, the relegation battle is still too close to call possibly till after the matches on Sunday.
