Ikorodu United confirmed their demotion to the second-tier Nigeria National League (NNL) Sunday after they lost 1-0 at Plateau United.
It’s a prompt return to the lower league, who debuted in the top flight championship this season.
A late rally that saw them beat champions Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Heartland has proved to be too little, too late.
Expelled Giwa FC have already been condemned to life in the lower division and two other clubs will be relegated with Akwa United, Niger Tornadoes, Shooting Stars not safe, while Heartland, Abia Warriors, Warri Wolves and MFM FC are more in danger.
An 11th minute goal headed home by Kelechi John off a cross by Bright Silas made it mathematically impossible for Ikorodu United to get off the relegation bracket with two matches left to the end the season.
Next weekend, they welcome champions-in-waiting Enugu Rangers in Abeokuta.
